serverless data

Upstash

Upstash provides serverless data infrastructure including Redis, Kafka, and QStash designed specifically for serverless and edge runtimes.

What the product actually does

Traditional Redis instances require continuous TCP connection pools that exhaust quickly in serverless environments. Upstash provides a Redis-compatible database accessed via stateless HTTP REST APIs.

It enables Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge Functions, and AWS Lambda to read and write low-latency cached data globally without TCP connection exhaustion.

How pricing works once you are inside

Billed purely per request (e.g., $0.20 per 100k commands) plus data storage size, with a generous daily free command tier.

Where it breaks down

High-throughput, continuous streaming workloads with millions of transactions per minute are more economically served by dedicated Redis clusters.

What switching costs

Low. Because Upstash supports the standard Redis wire protocol alongside its REST API, applications can easily point to self-hosted Redis or AWS ElastiCache.
